Current Projects
DON Enterprises administers multiple home repair and home accessibility modification grants across several counties in western Pennsylvania.
As part of DON’s commitment, we have built and sold 14 visitable, accessible, and affordable energy-efficient one-floor homes in New Castle, PA. Each home features:
-
2 or 3 Bedrooms
-
2 Bathrooms, including a fully accessible bathroom with a roll-in shower
-
2-Car Attached Garage
All homes are occupied by individuals who were previously homeless, including those with disabilities, survivors of domestic abuse, individuals in recovery from substance use, minorities, or senior citizens.
DON is dedicated to assisting with home modifications. The Lawrence County Redevelopment Authority provided funds for property renovations and new home builds, while the Lawrence County Land Bank supplied properties. Lowe's offered discounted materials, and DON allocated funding for the new home builds. Eckles Architecture and RCI Co. provided all the home designs. The county and city demolished several homes in the area and assisted in identifying initial properties marked for renovation. DON also worked on leveraging our current funds to create a greater impact in the area.
The first two rehabbed properties are now occupied. 204 Mulberry St. underwent total rehabilitation and is now one of DON's Nursing Home Transition (NTH) houses, where an individual wanting to leave a nursing home has been living. 720 Court St. was another total rehabilitation and was allocated to an individual on a PA Waiver.
DON is determined to help individuals on waivers become homeowners, as they face significant barriers to accessible and affordable housing. These individuals are at higher risk of living in substandard housing or being institutionalized. The new homeowners receive both pre- and post-home ownership counseling and must have an employment goal. Additionally, they receive employment services and intensive budget training. By combining housing with employment support, we provide individuals with a solid foundation to build upon, increasing their independence and well-being while decreasing costs related to insurance and other governmental resources.
